As an industry analyst and consultant, it’s my job to connect the dots. When I’m not helping LMS buyers define their goals and requirements, I’m evaluating the world’s best enterprise learning systems to clarify what makes each one special. In this process, considering the road forward is a natural part of the mix.
But how is the customer education tech stack evolving? And which trends matter most? These are questions every learning leader is trying to answer.
These questions have also been top of mind for me lately, while I’ve been finalizing our 2025 Customer LMS Buyer’s Guide. Based on detailed responses from 16 top customer LMS companies, this report compares platforms across dozens of critical purchasing criteria — LMS capabilities, strengths, related services, and more.

4 Trends Shaping Customer Education Tech Stacks
1. Customer Education Is Now a Go-to-Market Function
For years, customer learning programs focused on saving costs — cutting support tickets, streamlining onboarding, and improving operational efficiency. But now, that’s just a starting point. The most mature organizations have shifted their focus from cost-based outcomes to revenue-based performance.
This means they’re directly tying customer education to metrics like lead generation, pipeline growth, net new revenue, upsells, renewals, and lifetime customer value. It requires a shift from tracking training activity to measuring business impact.
As a result, LMS purchasing decisions are being influenced by sales, marketing, and customer success teams that expect learning platforms to support go-to-market goals.
To meet these expectations, customer education tech solutions must integrate with CRM platforms, automate customer lifecycle touchpoints, deliver actionable analytics, and include reporting that ties training efforts to meaningful business outcomes.
Cost reduction never goes out of style, but revenue generation is indispensable.
2. Impact Is Vital Across the Customer Lifecycle
If customer education is part of your revenue engine, it must show value — not just after a sale, but throughout the relationship lifecycle.
Modern companies start educating customers long before a deal is signed. They rely on learning to attract and convert qualified leads, facilitate onboarding, accelerate time to value, drive product adoption, and encourage ongoing product engagement. Many also empower customers to act as brand champions who can expand their user communities and enhance their support efforts.
From pre-sales marketing to onboarding, and retention to advocacy, learning must be highly personalized, contextual, and integrated with other aspects of the customer experience. This requires systems that are built to handle multiple personas, lifecycle stages, and business goals.

3. Customer LMS Vendors Come in Two Flavors
As demand continues to grow, the LMS market is more clearly defined by two types of solutions: multipurpose platforms and customer education specialists.
Multipurpose platforms like Absorb, Cornerstone, CYPHER Learning, and Docebo aim to serve employee, customer, and partner audiences with a single solution. Their strengths lie in flexibility and broader enterprise reach.
On the other hand, specialist solutions are purpose-built for customer and partner education. These platforms typically provide deeper functionality in areas such as ecommerce, white-label branding, multi-portal delivery, account-level reporting, and customer lifecycle integration.
Both types of vendors are winning customer education deals. But if you’re a buyer, pay close attention to your primary audience. If employee learning isn’t part of your strategy, a specialist platform may deliver faster time to value, and its functionality is likely to be better aligned with your audience’s needs.
4. AI Is Making a Transformative Impact
No one can talk about modern learning systems without considering artificial intelligence. It’s easy to see AI has finally come of age. Vendors are embedding AI-driven capabilities across the customer education tech stack — from content development and delivery to analytics and beyond.
On the content front, AI-driven tools are adding speed and agility to course creation, video production, quiz generation, and curriculum mapping. For customers, AI enhances educational experiences with personalized recommendations, adaptive learning paths, and intelligent agents that guide progress and answer questions along the way.
Meanwhile, on the admin front, AI is automating workflows, improving reporting precision, flagging risks, and supporting more timely, intelligent decisions. In short, AI is already helping customer education teams do more with less — faster, smarter, and at greater scale.
Even so, buyer beware. Capabilities vary significantly from vendor to vendor. If you’re considering any platform that claims to include AI, be sure to vet the effectiveness of relevant functionality, the transparency of the company’s AI tools strategy, and its ability to deliver practical benefits you can measure.
