This simple checklist can help you pinpoint key issues. For each of the following statements, answer yes or no:
1. Functional Gaps – Are you frustrated by limited or nonexistent LMS capabilities your organization genuinely needs? (With more than 1000 learning systems on the market today, at least one is bound to have a solution that meets all of your requirements.)
2. Service Gaps – Does your vendor lack sufficient staff expertise or bandwidth to guide and augment your team when necessary? (Trying to get by without qualified help is risky. But looking for the right kind of assistance independently can be costly and time-consuming.)
3. Integration Gaps – Does your LMS fall short in seamlessly sharing data across your enterprise infrastructure? (Although some organizations still enter data manually and patch together integration workarounds, these tactics are not sustainable.)
4. Upgrade Recommendations – Did you license a system, but now your vendor regularly suggests upgrading to another? (Before you say yes, why not consider other options?)
5. Product Instability – Do you need to contact your vendor more than once to resolve product issues, bugs or poor performance? (That’s so 1999.)
6. Lackluster Support – Does your LMS vendor take 24 hours or longer to acknowledge a support request? And do you generally wait another 24 hours for each update? (Slow-motion support means learning participants suffer.)
7. Mismatched License Model – Do you periodically deactivate LMS users to stay under a user-based licensing cap? (If so, you have a serious case of license model mismatch. Your team could be investing time more wisely.)
8. Learner Complaints – Do program participants regularly complain about any aspect of your system’s learner experience? (No one can afford to ignore negative feedback from the frontline.)
9. Executive Complaints – Have your organization’s leaders told your managers that they’ve heard complaints about the learner experience? (Now you know you’ve hit rock bottom.)
10. Stalled Innovation – Is your LMS vendor saying its first true AI-driven features are coming in 2026? (Roadmaps matter. If your vendor isn’t stepping up to the plate as a technology leader, the next move is yours.)

11. “Island” Syndrome – Look around at your vendor’s user group meeting. Is it hard to find many similar organizations with comparable use cases? (That’s a sure sign your LMS is walking, not running, in your direction.)
12. Feature Overload (But Not for You) – Does your LMS have tons of features you don’t use? Are the features you need most buried in the product roadmap? (That’s another clear sign of the wrong LMS.)
13. Hidden Fees Whack-a-Mole – When you want to leverage new features, does your vendor constantly charge more and more? (Either the vendor is greedy, or you made a poor purchase.)
14. Weak LMS Reporting – Does your LMS fail to measure the link between learning programs and business outcomes adequately? (These days, every business is a data business. If your solution can’t help demonstrate business impact, or provide insights to improve performance over time, then you might as well be flying blind.)
15. Yielding an Advantage – Are your learning programs designed to help employees, customers or partners raise their competitive game, yet people consistently fall short of the mark or lag behind established benchmarks? (If so, your LMS is probably part of the problem.)
16. Lack of Business Impact – Is the cost of your LMS more than the quantifiable impact it delivers? (You either have the wrong LMS or you’re not measuring results effectively.)
What Does Your Score Mean?
So, should you break up with your LMS? It’s not unusual for any one of these issues to crop up at one point or another. After all, enterprise software isn’t easy to develop, deploy or manage.
